2022 Plant Humanities Conference

The RCC is pleased to announce the launch of Springs: The Rachel Carson Center Review. A new open-access online publication features peer-reviewed articles, creative nonfiction, and artistic contributions that showcase the work of the RCC and its community across the world. In the spirit of Rachel Carson, Springs publishes sharp writing with an impact. Surveying the interrelationship between environmental and social changes from a wealth of disciplines and perspectives, it is a place to share rigorous research, test out fresh ideas, question old ones, and to advance public and scholarly debates in the environmental humanities and beyond.

Springs also brings together writing from other RCC publications. Its archive curates articles that were published in the open-access online and print journal RCC Perspectives(2010–2020), in the blog Seeing the Woods (2012–2021), and in the peer-reviewed online journal Arcadia: Explorations in Environmental History. 

A segunda edição do Congresso Internacional — Paisagens Coloniais e Pós-Coloniais terá lugar nos dias 18, 19 e 20 de janeiro de 2023 em Lisboa, na Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian. A chamada para apresentação de trabalhos no âmbito das sessões aprovadas encontra-se aberta até ao dia 2 de setembro de 2022.

O congresso faz parte do projeto de pesquisa em andamento intitulado “Archwar - Dominance and mass-violence through Housing and Architecture during colonial wars. The Portuguese case (Guinea-Bissau, Angola, Mozambique): colonial documentation and post-independence critical assessment” financiado pela FCT, no que participa a Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian.

O projeto de pesquisa busca analisar como as estratégias de controle durante as guerras coloniais/de libertação na Guiné-Bissau, Angola e Moçambique, com foco na habitação, repercutiram na configuração de seus territórios após a independência.

O objetivo deste congresso é alargar o debate sobre as repercussões das decisões tomadas pelos estados coloniais na área das infraestruturas territoriais — nomeadamente através das disciplinas de arquitetura e urbanismo — nos modelos de desenvolvimento pós-independência e na formação de novos países com passado colonial.

The creation of CWEH initative was a response to specialist courses and research conducted by Sussex faculty for over nine years in tropical and 'Southern' environmental history at, what was then, AFRAS and elsewhere in the University and within the Institute of Development Studies. Sussex University has a long research tradition focussed on environment and development problems in the tropics as well as a close relationship with the Institute of Development Studies (IDS), located on the Sussex campus, which is Britain's leading organisation carrying out research on social and economic processes and problems. Sussex University also has a solid tradition in radical history and the history of material culture and peasant society in the Global South, exemplified in the work of Professor Ranajit Guha and the Subaltern Studies School.

The Volume 25 is a Special Issue of Perspectivas - Journal of Political Science contains two articles that address issues relating to Spanish colonization. The first is about Colonization in Badajoz Province, and the second about the Environmental Coloniality in Francoist Spain.

The other two articles focus on European Countries. One of them analyzes the Italian fascist modernization and colonial landscape in Albania and the other one makes us reflect about Greece under Metaxas’ Regime.

The last two articles concern fascist colonialism in Libya and Mozambique.

Ao fazer um ano do início da bolsa ERC Synergy 4-OCEANS: Human History of Marine Life, os investigadores principais do projeto, liderados por Cristina Brito, em conjunto com várias outras entidades nacionais e internacionais, e em particular a Cátedra UNESCO 'Património Cultural dos Oceanos', publicam uma declaração em prol das Humanidades para os Oceanos. Este manifesto foi submetido à ONU no âmbito da Conferência dos Oceanos que se realizou em Lisboa e os princípios que regulam a Década para a Ciência dos Oceanos.
